Saskatoon.ca doesn’t get redesign funding (http://blogs.thestarphoenix.com/2011/12/07/saskatoon-ca-doesnt-get-redesign-cash/)

December 7, 2011

The City of Saskatoon website (http://www.saskatoon.ca/)was the first item “below the line” that councillors could have supported Tuesday night while debating how to spend $1.4-million in discretionary funds.

A proposal from the city manager’s office to spend $500,000 (actually a total of $600,000 with $100,000 in other funding already in place) was defended by Coun. Pat Lorje, Coun. Mairin Loewen, and Coun. Charlie Clark, and failed narrowly.

Lorje called the city website “embarassing” and a “laughing stock.”

The suggestion also caused a lot of discussion in the Twitter world. Todd Trann (http://twitter.com/#!/toddtrann) wrote: “Wow. $600k is a lot. 6 programmers and/or graphic artists paid decently… for a full year!” Jordon Cooper (http://twitter.com/#!/JordonCooper) wrote: “A website upgrade could have potentially been a brilliant political tool in communicating council projects.”

Coun. Darren Hill suggested that the city wait for the mistakes other cities make on websites before forging ahead.

He referenced this Globe and Mail story (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/technology/digital-culture/ivor-tossell/more-complexity-demands-greater-simplicity/article2147167/)fawning over the City of Calgary website and said there have been problems with that site since it launched.

Idiotic, I bet if they advertised some webdesigner would fo it for free just to put a link on the bottom.

Reminds me of the $11,000 screwdriver the government bought.

Government People, Webdesign is not that expensive!!!!!!
