I had to reach for my calculator upon reading that city staff recommended spending $2.5 million to redo the cityís seven-year-old website. Thatís $357,000 a year, or $1,000 a day the present website has cost us. Council has questioned the huge amount and decided to give $750,000 towards starting the project. I sure hope that cheque wasnít cashed yet. It would be far cheaper to hire a team of web designers on payroll or contract. A web design office with four full-time web designers and support staff could cost around $250,000 a year, far from the $357,000we are spending now. Thatís 10 years of work for the web team, based on the original hefty price tag. Given that the website needs updating more frequently than every 10 years, the web design office will be kept busy. Spending such a ridiculous amount of money without long-term value is a waste.

The thing is, I think all companies naturally ratchet up their fees when they know governments are involved.

Presume that they had this contract open for bidding, and this quote was the best/lowest - just imagine how ludicrous the other bids were.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that everything has to be controlled with the project. Even if they out source it, which they always seem to do, they have a project manager controlling every detail wanting status updates, weekly meeting, etc. Instead of just involving the few who need to, they drag everyone in, which wastes time, and increases fees. Not to mention, they like everything to be documented. While most of us fly be they seat of our pants when it comes to things like that. :)

Its unfortunate that when it comes to dealing with a bureaucracy or even a large company, a considerable part of the cost of a project is spent on the CYA. COVER YOUR ASS

indeed as long as we pay our taxes they will keep getting richer!
